“The Power of the Wasatch” Cougar Marching Band

BYU Spell at Pregame

The ground shakes as 225 players in blue and white storm the field at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The crowd cheers them on as they transform halftime into an event in its own right. It's the "Power of the Wasatch" — not the football team, but the Brigham Young University Cougar Marching Band.

An essential piece of the tradition and atmosphere of BYU athletics, the BYU Marching Band takes its nickname from the Wasatch mountain range, a stretch of the Rocky Mountains that passes through Provo, Salt Lake City, and Ogden, and provides the beautiful backdrop for BYU's campus. In the shadow of this mighty mountain range, we gather each fall to build a band worthy of this majestic backdrop. The music of BYU's band has echoed off these mountains since it first took the field in 1908 under the direction of Robert Sauer. Today the band is led by director Fred McInnis, assistant director Seretta Hart, and drumline instructor Danny Soulier.

For nearly a century, the Cougar Marching Band has captivated audiences with spectacular performances, and just like today, the band has always been there to support the school. The Band consists of 225 dedicated musicians from all over the United States and the world, and performs during pre-game and half-time at every BYU home football game. The BYU Cougar Marching Band also proudly features a dynamic and highly accomplished Drumline Battery of about 25-30 members, as well as an excellent Color Guard and Flag/Rifle Line composed of about 30 members. Together we make music, entertain audiences, and cheer on our team.

What is it like? How do I join?

The Cougar Marching Band proudly supports our BYU Cougar Football Team. Their success under legendary coach LaVell Edwards is responsible for an impressive number of bowl appearances, and we look forward to many more with new coach Bronco Mendenhall. The Cougar Band has performed in numerous bowl games in support of the Cougars, including the Cotton Bowl, Freedom Bowl, Liberty Bowl, Copper Bowl and many appearances at the Holiday Bowl.
