Auditions

Registering to Audition

Individuals interested in joining BYU Bands must complete an INTENT TO AUDITION FORM. Upon receipt of the form, the individual is added to our list of new applicants and returning band members. Applicants are automatically sent the necessary music and audition information at the appropriate time, based on expressed interest. (This information is FREQUENTLY sent automatically to applicants' "junk email" box, based on how your email is set up. Please check your "junk email" box in addition to your regular email frequently following application.)

Begin The Application Process

Marching Band Auditions

Marching Band auditions take place in the Spring prior to each Fall marching season. Should you be selected for membership, you will be required to attend Band Camp for the week in August prior to the beginning of Fall semester. Audition schedules and procedures vary depending on the segment of the band, and detailed information regarding these particular auditions are available following submission of the INTENT TO AUDITION FORM. Some general information is available via the following links:

Brass & Woodwind Drumline Color Guard

Prior to auditions (usually in March) audition information is automatically sent by email to applicants that have expressed interest in Marching Band. This email contains the necessary materials and instructions, and includes the following links and information:

If for some reason you do not receive this information and feel you should have, contact the Band Office. Please be considerate and patient, as we have many, many people audition each year. (This information is FREQUENTLY sent automatically to applicants' "junk email" box, based on how your email is set up. Please check your "junk email" box in addition to your regular email frequently following application.)

Band Leadership / Drum Major Auditions

Band Leadership Corp applications are accepted beginning sometime in March, and pertinent information is sent in advance to band members from the previous year. (If you are returning from a mission and are interested, please let us know directly.) BLC applications are accepted until positions have been filled. Available positions include:

Drum Major
Section Leader
Squad Leader
VP: Logistics
VP: Records
VP: Rehearsal
VP: Rocky Mountain Band Invitational
VP: Student Representation
VP: Uniforms

Drum Major auditions generally occur on a reading day before final exams in April. Obviously, applications must be received in advance of that date. Applicants will receive a recording or a marching band song to conduct in auditions, and there are several other steps. Interested parties usually apply as soon as possible after we begin accepting applications to give themselves adequate time to prepare. Drum Major applicants must be a member of the Cougar Marching Band for one year prior to application.

Pep Band Auditions

Pep Band auditions are held in the middle of fall semester (mid-October) and are somewhat less formal. These live auditions are conducted by Pep Band director Fred McInnis, both after Marching Band rehearsals and on appointment. Auditions continue until both 30-member bands are fully staffed.

Concert Band Auditions

For both Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band, auditions take place at the beginning of the semester. The auditions are conducted by the studio teachers on each instrument. Additional instructions are sent in early August to students whose forms express interest in these ensembles.

University Band is only offered during Winter semester (Jan-Apr), and no audition is required. However, limits are placed upon instrumentation. Students that wish to participate should contact the director towards the end of Fall Semester (December).

Scholarships & Talent/Service Awards

Although many non-music majors participate in the performing ensembles at BYU, it is the policy of the school of music to only award music scholarships to majors. The final determination of these awards is accomplished by the studio teachers and the office of admissions.

Marching Band Talent/Service Awards are not subject to these same restrictions. Any qualified member of the Marching Band is eligible for these awards. The award amounts begin at approximately $400 with increases based upon experience, instrumentation, and leadership responsibilities.
