Frequently Asked Questions — Concert Bands

(Also see FAQ regarding Athletic Bands.)

This list contains several questions relating to BYU Concert Bands. Follow the link above to find FAQ's for marching Band. Please check through this list before contacting the band office to see if your question is answered here. Thanks!

How do I join?

Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band are both audition groups, and the process is explained on the Auditions Page. University Band does a non-audition group, but is based on priority registration and instrumentation needs. Details are below.

Wind Symphony

What is the time commitment for participating in Wind Symphony?

Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band both meet from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. There are generally 2 concerts (combined with Symphonic Band) per semester. There are no other rehearsals outside of these class times.

How often does the Wind Symphony tour? What costs are involved?

Wind Symphony typically tours every other year. The costs are nominal due to strong support from sponsors, the university, and various grants.

Symphonic Band

If I can't tour with Wind Symphony, is Symphonic Band still challenging and rewarding?

Although the Wind Symphony is the premiere wind ensemble of the university, the Symphonic Band performance level and the literature performed is on par with many top ensembles from other universities.

University Band

Can I be in University Band even if I haven't played for a while?

Yes, the band is open to all wind and percussion students without audition. However, once the registration is full, adjustments are only made to fill out the ensemble with needed instrumentation.

If there are no auditions, how do I get in?

First placement is through online registration. After that, students should contact director Fred McInnis by email and come to the first rehearsal to see if there are available positions remaining on their instrument.

What if I want to learn a new instrument?

Music majors often enroll in the class playing a new instrument to fulfill requirements for their major. However, we unfortunately cannot accomodate other students wishing to learn another instrument. And questions or concerns may be brought to the director.
