Frequently Asked Questions
-
Toggle ItemAre my chances of being accepted lower if I’m not a music major?
No! We have students from virtually every major on campus. Students in most majors enjoy being a part of the band because they still want to perform on their instrument and have an “outlet” from their other college studies. Of course, music majors are also an important part of the organization and many of them see this experience as a way to prepare for future careers in music.
-
Toggle ItemCan I participate in both the ROC Bands and a concert band?
Many band members (even non-majors) do participate in both ROC and concert bands simultaneously. Also, since the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band are offered both semesters, there is the possibility of joining a concert band during the winter semester. Instrumentalists are encouraged to continue performing year-round and the non-auditioned University Band provides the opportunity for many as it is offered as an evening class.
-
Toggle ItemIf I am selected, what are the expectations?
In short, becoming the best you can be musically and spiritually. Should you be selected for membership, you will be required to attend all rehearsals, games, and performances.
-
Toggle ItemWhat is the size of the band?
Each of the 2 ROC Bands consists of the following instrumentation:
- 2 Alto Saxes
- 2 Tenor Saxes
- 1 Bari Sax
- 4 F Horns
- 9 Trumpets
- 6 Trombones
- 2 Baritones
- 2 Tubas
- 1 Drum Kit
- 1 Electric Bass
-
Toggle ItemDo band members get scholarships?
Yes! All band members receive scholarships based on the number of basketball games/performances the band attends during the season.
-
Toggle ItemWhen will I get my scholarship?
Due to University Policy, all scholarships will be posted the day after the Add/Drop Deadline for Winter Semester. Please do not email the Band Office with questions about scholarships. If you require assistance with tuition, please contact the University Financial Services office.
-
Toggle ItemHow much time does ROC Band require during the semester?
Rehearsals are held each Wednesday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm for all games before Winter Semester begins. Once Winter Semester begins, rehearsals are held each Thursday from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM (with possible future date changes for 2025). You are also required to attend every basketball game. Games require a time commitment of approximately 3 hours. Including rehearsal, the time required can vary between 2-5 hours each week depending on the BYU Basketball game schedule. The above estimate does not include time spent outside of rehearsal preparing your music.
-
Toggle ItemAm I required to attend every home game?
Yes. Missing a performance without organizing a substitute for yourself is grounds for failure of the class. Any absence from a performance must be approved by the Director ahead of time except in case of emergency, and must be covered by a substitute performer. There will be a fee incurred for any substitutes needed. Plan on attending every home game.
-
Toggle ItemWhen am I expected to arrive for home games?
The call time is typically 45 minutes before tipoff.
-
Toggle ItemDoes the band attend away games?
The band does not attend away games during the regular season. However, occasionally games are played at a "neutral site" at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.
-
Toggle ItemWill the band be attending the Conference and NCAA tournaments?
Most likely. Attendance at tournaments is contingent on BYU’s performance during the regular season. Students will receive postseason tournament info AS SOON AS WE HAVE IT. As with all games, attendance at post-season tournaments is required.
-
Toggle ItemWhat plans should I make for classes and post-season tournaments?
Talk with your professors ahead of time. The better the basketball team performs in tournaments, the longer the band will travel.
-
Toggle ItemHow will students travel to the tournament games?
Typically, BYU will provide travel to and from postseason tournament locations, including housing AND per diem.
-
Toggle ItemHow do I obtain an instrument if I don’t own one?
Contact the School of Music’s Instrument Office.
-
Toggle ItemHow will I get my music for the season?
You are required to pick up your music binder from the Music Library on campus in the Music Building before the first rehearsal (1034 MB). Check their hours ahead of time so that you aren’t left unprepared during the first rehearsal.
